About Hare Krishna Temple:
The Hare Krishna Temple Melbourne, located in Albert Park, is one of Victoria’s most vibrant Hindu spiritual communities and serves as a major centre for devotion, worship, and cultural life within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition.
Affiliated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), the temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna and is well known for its daily prayers, devotional chanting, sacred music, and vegetarian hospitality.
The temple welcomes people from all backgrounds and plays an important role in sharing Hindu spirituality, meditation, philosophy, and community service with the wider Victorian community. Through festivals such as Janmashtami — the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna — and kirtan gatherings involving devotional singing and chanting, the temple expresses Hinduism as a living spiritual tradition in contemporary Melbourne.
As part of the Sacred Victoria project, the Hare Krishna Temple represents both the rich diversity of Hindu traditions in Victoria and the enduring role of faith communities in fostering connection, compassion, and spiritual life.

History:
The Hare Krishna Temple in Albert Park is one of Australia’s oldest centres of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The movement was founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who introduced the teachings of Krishna consciousness to the Western world and visited Melbourne several times during the 1970s.
The Melbourne Hare Krishna community was first established in St Kilda before moving to its current home in Albert Park in 1974. In May 1975, Srila Prabhupada officially opened the temple and installed the sacred deities of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai – Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Gaura) and Lord Nityananda (Nitai) – marking an important milestone in the growth of the movement in Australia.
Today, the temple remains a vibrant place of worship, spiritual learning, devotional music, and community celebration, welcoming visitors from all backgrounds to experience the traditions of Krishna consciousness.
