About Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib:
Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Keysborough, is one of the major Sikh places of worship in Victoria and serves as a spiritual, educational, cultural, and community centre for Sikhs across Melbourne’s south-east. The Gurdwara welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds who wish to learn about Sikhism, its beliefs, values, and traditions.
At the heart of the Gurdwara is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh holy scripture and eternal Guru, which is regarded by Sikhs as the living spiritual guide. Daily worship includes the recitation of prayers, the singing of sacred hymns (Kirtan), and readings from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, providing spiritual guidance for everyday life.
A defining feature of every Gurdwara is the Langar, a free vegetarian community meal served to all visitors without distinction of religion, culture, nationality, gender, or social status. Prepared and served by volunteers, Langar reflects the Sikh principles of equality, humility, hospitality, and Seva (selfless service), ensuring that everyone sits and eats together as equals.
The Gurdwara also provides religious education, youth and children’s programs, pastoral care, and opportunities for volunteering and community service. Throughout the year it hosts major Sikh religious commemorations, educational visits, and interfaith and multicultural activities that promote friendship, mutual understanding, and respect across the wider community.

History:
The Sikh community in Victoria has grown steadily since the latter half of the twentieth century through migration from India and other parts of the world. As the community expanded, there was an increasing need for larger, purpose-built Gurdwaras to meet the religious, educational, and community needs of Sikh families across Melbourne.
Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib was established in Keysborough to provide a permanent place of worship and community gathering for the growing Sikh population in Melbourne’s south-east. Located on Perry Road, it has become one of Victoria’s principal Sikh centres, welcoming thousands of worshippers, volunteers, students, and visitors each year.
Over the years, the Gurdwara has expanded its facilities to accommodate daily congregational worship, religious education, community celebrations, youth activities, and the preparation and serving of Langar. It also welcomes schools, universities, government agencies, community organisations, and visitors seeking to learn about Sikhism and the Sikh values of equality, compassion, respect, justice, and selfless service.
Today, Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib continues to play an important role in Victoria’s multicultural and multifaith community. Through worship, education, community service, and interfaith engagement, it contributes to social cohesion while supporting the spiritual, cultural, and social wellbeing of the Sikh community and the broader Australian community.
Sikh Interfaith Leader: Jasbir Singh Suropada
Jasbir Singh Suropada is a respected Sikh faith leader, educator and community representative who has dedicated many years to promoting understanding of Sikhism, interfaith dialogue and community harmony across Victoria.
Guided by the Sikh principles of equality, compassion, justice and seva (selfless service), Jasbir has played a leading role in strengthening understanding of the Sikh faith among schools, universities, government agencies, healthcare organisations, faith communities and the wider public. Through educational visits to the Gurdwara, presentations and guided tours, he introduces visitors to Sikh beliefs, practices and traditions, helping them gain a deeper appreciation of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the significance of the Gurdwara and langar, and the Sikh values of equality, human dignity and service.
Jasbir serves as Chair of the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria and is a Management Committee Member of the Faith Communities Council of Victoria, working collaboratively with faith leaders, government and community organisations to promote dialogue, inclusion and respect for religious diversity. Through his leadership, he continues to build bridges across cultures and faiths, believing that education, respectful dialogue and shared service are essential to fostering an inclusive, peaceful and socially cohesive society.
