History:
The name Axion Estin, meaning “It is Truly Meet,” comes from one of the most treasured hymns of the Orthodox Church, honouring the Virgin Mary (the Theotokos). According to Orthodox tradition, the hymn was miraculously revealed on Mount Athos during the tenth century and has remained an integral part of Orthodox worship ever since. The name reflects the cathedral’s deep devotion to the Mother of God and its connection to the spiritual traditions of Eastern Christianity.
Formerly the site of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and later established as a monastery under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, Axion Estin continues the centuries-old tradition of Orthodox liturgical life through daily prayer, worship, contemplation, hospitality, and pastoral ministry. The cathedral serves not only as a place of spiritual renewal for Orthodox Christians but also as a welcoming place for visitors seeking to understand the beliefs, traditions, and worship of the Orthodox Church.

Faith Leader: His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora
His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora is a bishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. A clergyman of the Archdiocese since 2007, he was ordained to the Holy Episcopacy on 20 November 2021 by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia. As Bishop of Chora, he provides spiritual leadership and pastoral care to Orthodox communities throughout Victoria and also serves ex officio as Dean of the Cathedral of Our Lady Axion Estin in Northcote.
His ministry is centred on the celebration of the Divine Services, the proclamation of the Gospel, pastoral care, and the preservation of the rich liturgical and spiritual traditions of the Orthodox Christian faith.
Throughout his ministry, Bishop Evmenios has been dedicated to supporting clergy and parish communities, encouraging the faithful to deepen their relationship with Christ while serving others with compassion, humility, and love. He regularly presides over Divine Liturgies, ordinations, feast day celebrations, and other significant events in the life of the Church.
Bishop Evmenios also values respectful engagement with people of different faiths and backgrounds, recognising the importance of dialogue and cooperation in strengthening Victoria’s diverse and multicultural community.
